Cadillac is a luxury vehicle marque owned by General Motors. Cadillac vehicles are sold in over 50 countries and territories, but mainly in North America.

Cadillac is currently the second oldest American automobile manufacturer behind Buick and among the oldest automobile brands in the world. Depending on how one chooses to measure, Cadillac is arguably older than Buick. Since GM has discontinued offering Oldsmobile, Buick has the distinction as the oldest American make.

Cadillac was born in 1902, at the dawn of the twentieth century. Its founder, Henry Leland, a master mechanic and entrepreneur, named the company after his ancestor, Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, born Antoine Laumet, the founder of Detroit. It was purchased in 1909 by General Motors and within six years, Cadillac laid the foundation for the modern mass production of automobiles by demonstrating the complete interchangeability of its precision parts, also establishing itself as America's premier luxury car. This is also the inspiration for the company’s crest, which is based on a coat of arms "created" by Detroit's founder, around the time of his marriage in Quebec, in 1687 (there is no ancient "Cadillac" family or coat of arms in France). Cadillac pioneered many accessories in automobiles, including full electrical systems, the clashless manual transmission and the steel roof. The brand developed three engines, one of which (the V8 engine) set the standard for the American automotive industry. Cadillac is the first American car to win the prestigious Dewar Trophy from the Royal Automobile Club of England - having successfully demonstrated the interchangeability of its component parts during a reliability test in 1908; this spawned the firm's slogan "Standard of the World". It won that trophy a second time, in 1912, for incorporating electric starting and lighting in a production automobile.

Luxury Cadillac XTS Platinum concept

Cadillac has of late been quite successful in ditching its old man’s car image, spearheaded by hip-hop’s favourite SUV, the Escalade, and the sharply styled CTS sports sedan. But some remnants of its conservative past remains in the range, such as the DTS, which looks stuck in the 90s and totally out of sync with Caddy’s new image.

For Detroit, GM’s luxury brand shows off the XTS Platinum concept, a big car application of Cadillac’s “Art & Science” design language which would complete the brand transformation should it replace the STS/DTS. It’s pretty much the big brother of the CTS – carrying the same sharp, angular lines, but with more restraint.

The XTS is powered by a 3.6-litre direct injection V6 paired with a plug-in hybrid system, which is estimated to produce 350 bhp and 400 Nm. The concept uses an AWD chassis. The XTS’ Magnetic Ride Control uses shocks controlled by magneto-rheological tech, rather than mechanical valves, to govern body control and ride comfort.

Like current Platinum Edition Caddys, the concept’s interior is full of hand cut-and-sewn materials. The XTS injects more contemporary forms and themes into the cabin, including the use of Organic LED displays in place of traditional gauges and screens, which contrasts the warm wood trim. “We envisioned this concept as an automotive personal headquarters, using advanced technology to enable new levels of connectivity and luxury,” said Bryan Nesbitt, Cadillac’s GM

Founded in 1902 as Cadillac Automobile Company was purchased by General Motors and thirty years later had become a symbol of the high standard of luxury. Cadillac became a pioneer in automotive technology as several cars completely closed, and the automatic start replacing the old cranks and uncomfortable. During the First World War, the Cadillac aircraft engines had a technical, paying them 100% of its production capacity. In the year 1924 the Cadillac company offered a lot of color and chrome paintings, while other automakers offered only in black. In this decade, the automaker innovates once again by becoming the first company in the industry to use a designer, Harley Earl, in place of an engineer to design the bodywork of their Cadillac cars in 1927. The following year, GM has also incorporated two major companies producing car bodies for exclusive CADILLAC, Fisher and Fleetwood, which contributed greatly to the improvement of the line brand automobiles. In fact the methods of precision created by Leland, associated with pioneering the use of advanced technologies has created an image of quality and reliability around the brand Cadillac. Another factor that has contributed to increase the prestige of the brand was the fact that it has become the preferred artistic emerging class of Hollywood of the 20s onwards. The image of that era artists like Clara Bow, William Boyd, Joan Crowcroft, Dolores Del Rio and Marlene Dietrich, reaching in CADILLAC cars in the "Avant Premiere" of his films ended lending the brand a lot of "Glamour" the Hollywood of those years. Other classes also have embraced the brand's models were the heads of state, members of the nobility, magnates, artists and intellectuals from other areas renowned.
